Student Fatally Attacked Over Dispute on Sweets Sales Fee

Tragic Outcome: Student Killed Over Candy Sales Dispute

A violent incident in Umlazi, located in the southern part of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), has resulted in the death of one teenager and injuries to two others. The attack occurred after a group of men reportedly demanded a protection fee from students selling sweets.

As per unverified accounts, three students from Menzi High School were selling sweets on Maponya Road in N Section on Friday when they were confronted by a group of men.

The suspects allegedly sought a protection fee, and when the students declined to comply, the situation escalated.

Knives were drawn during the confrontation, leading to the stabbing of a 19-year-old student, who died at the scene. Two other students, aged 17 and 19, suffered stab wounds and were taken to a hospital for medical attention.

Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal police, confirmed that a murder investigation and two counts of attempted murder have been initiated. Authorities are actively pursuing leads to apprehend the suspects.

The students were reportedly engaged in selling sweets to supplement their income, a practice that is not unusual among schoolchildren in the vicinity. This assault has raised significant alarm regarding extortion and gang violence targeting youth.

The local community in Umlazi is grappling with shock and anger, with many residents demanding immediate justice and enhanced safety measures for schoolchildren.

Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the suspects to reach out to Umlazi SAPS without delay.
