Asisat Oshoala scored the first goal in the 8th minute following a clever through pass from Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade. After a strong save from the goalkeeper, the ball deflected off Oshoala and into the net.
The match took a significant turn in the 41st minute when Blessing Demehin Oluwatosin received a red card for fouling Barbara Banda, who was poised to score. After a VAR review, the referee had no choice but to take action.
Despite being a player down, the Super Falcons have been the more effective team thus far. Zambia has been unable to generate significant opportunities and has yet to record a shot on goal.
Nigeria must defend diligently to retain their lead through the duration of the second half with only 10 players.
Coach Justin Madugu may consider bringing Shukurat Oladipo onto the field, given her speed could help counter Banda and provide additional defensive support.
