Well-known gospel artist Dumi Mkokstad has addressed a viral clip that displays him holding a gun.
The Endaweni ebanzi performer gained significant attention on social media after a video of him with a firearm circulated online.
This video surfaced shortly after he marked his birthday on Thursday, 7 May 2026, prompting various reactions from South Africans, which he addressed in a conversation with Daily Sun.

Responding to inquiries about the ownership of the gun, Dumi Mkokstad, whose actual name is Mdumiseni Nzimande, clarified that the video is not recent and dates back to 2021. He shared that the firearm does not belong to him but to a friend, providing context for how he ended up in possession of the weapon during a soccer tournament.
“The gun doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to one of my friends, and it’s an old video from 2021. That year, I was invited to Msinga, KZN, to perform during a soccer tournament, and it was my first time holding a gun,” he said.
He also highlighted that the holster did not fit him well, indicating it was not designed for his use.
“If you watch the video properly, you’ll see that the gun isn’t properly fitted on my hip,” Dumi Mkokstad added.
The artist expressed his disappointment regarding the exaggerated reaction to the footage. He emphasized that if it had been a recent video, he would have assumed accountability.
“It was posted by a friend, and I shared it. Now, people have found something negative because the video is about me. I don’t want this to be blown out of proportion because it’s an old video. If it was something new, I’d take full responsibility,” he said.
