Zee Nxumalo: How Emtee Shaped My Journey in Rap

Man-Gale May 19, 2026 3 minutes read

Zee Nxumalo, an amapiano artist from South Africa, has shared insights about her path in music, highlighting the influence of artists like Emtee during her early days as a rapper.

The emerging star recently engaged in a candid discussion about her artistic journey during an interview on Gagasi FM. She reflected on how her music has transformed over time. Initially, Zee entered the music scene as a rapper known as Zee The Toxic.

In her account, she noted that her initial style was shaped significantly by the work of admired rappers, particularly Emtee, whose melodic style in hip hop deeply affected her artistic choices.

“When I started music, I was very much inspired by the likes of Emtee, so I used to sound like them a lot when I did music because obviously I was inspired by them,” she mentioned during the interview.

Zee Nxumalo pointed out that taking cues from established artists was a normal aspect of her artistic development. Like others who are new to the industry, she began by examining the music of those who resonated with her on a personal level.

However, as time passed, her artistic journey guided her toward realizing her unique identity and sound. Through continuous exploration of music and honing her skills, she made a significant shift from rap to amapiano, which played a key role in establishing her as a notable vocalist in the genre.

“But now I got my own sound, I have found my sound,” she expressed with pride.

<p Nxumalo also emphasized the significance of patience and dedication in the music realm, urging aspiring artists to embrace the journey of growth and self-exploration. She believes that artistic maturation is a gradual process, leading musicians to gain confidence in their creative selves.

“It gets better with time, the talent gets better, you eventually find your sound,” she remarked.

Her narrative resonates with the experiences of many emerging artists who often find their early work influenced by inspiration before developing their distinctive style. For Zee Nxumalo, this evolution helped shift her focus from rap to amapiano, where she has been steadily gaining acclaim for both her vocal talent and dynamic performances.

Now, Zee Nxumalo is making significant strides in the South African music scene and is building her brand with each new release. Her journey from Zee The Toxic to a prominent figure in amapiano underscores the importance of growth, experimentation, and resilience in the entertainment field.

With new music anticipated, fans look forward to witnessing her ongoing evolution as an artist while maintaining the unique sound she has cultivated.
