A renowned singer, actress, and storyteller, Zolani Mahola is embarking on a transformative phase in her artistic journey with the release of new music, a collaboration with Virgin Music Group, and an exploration of new musical styles.
Recognized as one of the most influential voices in Africa, Zolani’s upcoming work reflects a creative shift grounded in her identity, narrative, and sound innovation, while maintaining the emotional authenticity that has characterized her career.
The first track from this new partnership, “XhosaNostra,” is set to be released on 4 June 2026, marking a bold arrival for Zolani as both an artist and a visionary. The track embodies her Xhosa roots while exploring new musical avenues, presenting a vibrant Gqom anthem that celebrates cultural pride and artistic exploration.
This single includes one of the last recordings from the late Bravo Le Roux, alongside production by London-based, Grammy-nominated producer Hannah V, whose intricate soundscapes infuse the release with a unique energy.
Reflecting on this progression, Zolani remarks: “This season feels like a return to myself in many ways. The music is bold, rooted, playful, emotional, and deeply African. I’m excited to partner with a team that understands both the vision and the scale of what we’re building.”
Zolani initially gained worldwide recognition as the lead singer of Freshlyground, who has toured for 17 years globally and contributed to the international hitWaka Waka (This Time for Africa) in collaboration with Shakira. Throughout her career, she has performed alongside and collaborated with esteemed artists like Thandiswa Mazwai, Simphiwe Dana, Msaki, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and Yo-Yo Ma.
Apart from her musical endeavors, Zolani’s artistic pursuits include theatre, film, and advocacy work. Her honors encompass performances at Carnegie Hall, a Fleur du Cap Theatre Award for Best Actress, and recognition from the South African Music Awards for Best Produced Album for her solo projectThetha Mama.
