Victor Mthethwa Majola, who is charged with the murder of media figure Warrick “DJ Warras” Stock, will continue to be held in custody after his bail hearing was delayed until January 13.
The 44-year-old appeared briefly in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, with the adjournment aimed at allowing the state to verify his residential address.
Majola faces serious charges categorized under Schedule 6, which include premeditated murder and conspiracy to commit murder. A conviction could result in life imprisonment.
The National Prosecuting Authority has expressed its intention to firmly contest bail due to the gravity of the alleged offenses and the ongoing nature of the investigation.
During the court session, concerns were raised regarding allegations from the defense claiming that Majola was assaulted by police at the time of his arrest.
The court noted issues regarding whether he received medical attention while in custody at Johannesburg Correctional Services, although this matter was not addressed definitively.
DJ Warras was fatally shot on December 16 outside the Zambesi House in Johannesburg’s central business district while performing security duties.
Surveillance footage reportedly shows several individuals approaching him shortly before the shooting occurred.
Majola was taken into custody on December 23 at the Merafe Hostel located in Mapetla, Soweto.
A female co-accused who was apprehended alongside him has had her charges provisionally dropped due to a lack of evidence.
Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and further arrests could happen.
The matter is set to return to court on January 13, where Majola’s bail application will be examined.
