‘In Jack Ryan: Ghost War’, John Krasinski is back for yet another thrilling adventure of espionage, action, and intrigue.
There are spy thrillers, and then there are truly captivating spy thrillers. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War belongs in the latter category. It’s filled with action, easy to enjoy, and remarkably entertaining. This film seamlessly follows the previous four seasons of the television series, featuring the same character and cast. Just as engaging.
Fast forward three years, and Ryan has swapped his CIA badge for a corporate position on Wall Street. He believes he has left behind the life of international espionage. But the narrative doesn’t permit a straightforward, uneventful life after spy work. Almost immediately after the opening credits roll, Ryan finds himself drawn back into the shadows of covert operations—much to his reluctance.
Initially, this task seemed straightforward. His ex-CIA colleague, James Greer, convinces him to retrieve a package from an MI6 operative in Dubai. However, the assignment turns grim when the British agent is killed, thrusting Ryan and his old ally Mike November into a treacherous conspiracy.
The investigation reveals Project Starling, a clandestine American intelligence initiative set up post-9/11, which was allegedly decommissioned years ago. Yet, it appears someone overlooked informing its former head, Liam Crown. Having gone rogue, he is orchestrating a series of terror attacks to showcase the necessity of individuals like him in government operations.
Rogue Agent
Ryan takes on the role of antagonist to Crown and teams up with MI6 agent Emma Marlow from Britain. The challenge is that Crown always seems to maintain the upper hand. As casualties mount, it becomes clear the rogue agent has powerful allies backing him.
It doesn’t require stating that Ghost War embodies the essence of a classic spy flick, filled with shootouts and suspense. The basic plotline is familiar territory, yet it’s the execution and storytelling that deliver the excitement. Strong performances, effective direction, and brisk editing can elevate the experience from mundane to exhilarating.

Jack Ryan: Ghost War provides far more than fleeting moments of entertainment. John Krasinski reprises his role as Ryan, joined by Sienna Miller as MI6’s Emma Marlow, Michael Kelly as Mike November, and Wendell Pierce as James Greer. This remarkable ensemble truly delivers. And they do it exceptionally well.
Krasinski easily steps back into his character, and the chemistry among the returning cast enhances the film’s appeal. There’s no necessity to spend excessive time introducing the characters. Instead, the action kicks in rapidly and remains relentless.
The underlying conspiracy connects all the plot threads, offering a mix of predictability and surprise. Yet, who really minds? Ghost War is undoubtedly one of the most entertaining films of the year within its genre. Forget those nitpicking critics and take a moment for some cinematic indulgence.
